A Heart Attack and Cardiac Arrest are distinct but related medical emergencies. A heart attack, or Myocardial Infarction, is a circulation problem where blood flow to the heart is blocked, potentially damaging the heart muscle.

Cardiac arrest, on the other hand, is an electrical problem where the heart suddenly stops beating effectively, leading to loss of consciousness and potentially, death.

  • A Heart Attack can lead to Cardiac Arrest, but they are not the same thing
  • Cardiac Arrest is more serious and potentially fatal emergency requiring immediate CPR and defibrillation
  • Survival rates for Cardiac Arrest are significantly higher when CPR and defibrillation (AED) are administered quickly

The immediate use of an AED and CPR within 3-5 minutes, can increase the  chance of survival up to 45%
